Non-Traditional Learners at SUU

Non-traditional learners make up about 42% of students currently enrolled at Southern Utah University. With nearly half of the students on campus fitting this mold, SUU has made an effort to support them with the Non-Traditional Student Services Center.

“I love serving the non-traditional student population here at SUU because it’s so beautiful to watch people achieving their dreams,” said Emily Walters, a peer mentor at the Non-Traditional Student Services Center.

Non-traditional students include those who are above the age of 25, have children or have had at least a three year gap in their education.

“It’s very common for non-traditional students to experience struggles in school and in their personal lives that are completely different from what the stereotypical college student may be going through,” said Walters. “So, I feel really grateful to be part of such an incredible community and support system for them.”

The center provides a space for non-traditional learners to connect, utilize campus resources and seek support through a variety of resources such as family benefits for SUU athletics games, performances and more.

“I navigate work, school and family by having a good support system,” said Non-traditional student Allisa Thayer. “My grandma is my biggest supporter and she’s the reason why I’m able to do everything that I do.”

Thayer found ways to navigate life as a business owner and a mom to a three-year-old little boy by seeking a lot of support and keeping her goals in mind.

“I’m continuing my education for my son; he’s my motivation. I grew up really poor and I’m determined to make sure he doesn’t grow up the way I did,” said Thayer. “That has really pushed me to do better and to want more for myself and for him.”

The Non-Traditional Student Services Center offers social and academic support. It is located inside the Sharwan Smith Student Center in room ST 172.
