SUU helicopter crash injures pilot and flight student

A pilot and a flight student were hospitalized on Saturday morning after a helicopter affiliated with Southern Utah University crashed at Cedar City Regional Airport. According to Cedar City News, the incident occurred shortly before 7:30 a.m. near the SUU Aviation hangar.

Authorities reported that both individuals were transported to the Cedar City hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while the aircraft suffered major damage during the crash. No additional airport property was damaged.

The cause of the accident has not yet been released. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are currently investigating.

SUU public relations director Brooke Heath provided a brief written statement to Cedar City News regarding the situation.

“The safety of our students, faculty and staff is our top priority, and we are working closely with the NTSB and FAA to investigate the incident.”

SUU President Mindy Benson also addressed the incident in a campus-wide email.

“Incidents like this are taken seriously, and we are committed to fully supporting the review process,” said Benson. “As more information becomes available, we will share updates as appropriate. Thank you for your care and support for one another.”

Additional information regarding the crash is expected to be released as the investigation continues.
