Thunder 91 hosts T-Birds to paint vinyls and enjoy drinks

Thunder 91, Southern Utah University’s radio station, held its semiannual Sips n’ Spins event on Friday, Nov. 14, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Living Room. Students gathered to paint vinyl records and enjoy warm drinks.

The station sold vinyls for $2 and hot drinks for $1. They also supplied paints, brushes, popcorn and music for the attendees.

Students mingled with friends while creating works of art on their vinyls. T-Birds designed everything, ranging from flowers, mountains and landscapes to stripes, animals and fruit. Some students made paintings to take home, while others created gifts for friends.

“I think it is super fun, a lot of people are here, and they also had popcorn and drinks for people, which is nice,” said Bella Miles, an attendee at the event.

Students involved with the radio program planned and staffed the event, preparing drinks, making playlists, setting up tables and handing out supplies.

“I’ve been here all day preparing for Sips n’ Spins,” said radio staff Brynn Smith. “It takes a lot of work, but it’s worth it to create a fun time for students.”

Ryan Steineckert, director of Thunder 91, said these events help promote Thunder 91 to potential listeners and encourage students to get involved in the campus radio program.

Thunder 91 is a radio station run by students and staff of SUU. They play commercial free music and feature local artists. The station also provides music for school events like tailgates and job fairs. Additionally, they broadcast SUU sports events and local high school sports games.

The radio station hosts other events, such as the Battle of the Bands, Guitars Unplugged and the Thunderground Throwdown.
