SUU Leavitt Center hosts sustainability craft night ahead of holiday season

Promoting civic engagement and environmental awareness, Southern Utah University’s Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics & Public Service hosted  the Falling Into Sustainability event  on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Students gathered for an evening of crafting while learning about sustainability and its impact.

Kaci Rohrer, a member of the Executive Council and marketing co-chair for the Leavitt Center, opened the event with a presentation outlining definitions of sustainability and the impact of individual action. With the holiday season approaching, she  highlighted ways to reduce waste and make environmentally conscious choices.

According to her presentation, Americans waste about 16 million pounds of food on Thanksgiving alone, and it is similar during other holiday seasons. With that, Rohrer encouraged students to save their leftovers, share or donate extra food and cook what they actually need.

She also pointed out that gift wrap and online shopping packaging add a lot to holiday waste. To cut that down, using reusable or repurposed materials and shopping locally can help reduce shipping emissions.

“I think the sustainability subject is important and I think it’s always a good reminder to have,” said attendee Penelope Campion.

Alongside the presentation, participants created bookmarks and greeting cards while enjoying snacks. Students exchanged ideas and various creations came to life.

“I love doing DIY things, and I think it’s super fun to come and meet people and make cute little things to relax in between assignments,” Campion said. “I think it’s nice to take an hour to just have fun.”

The Leavitt Center hosts an event every Thursday, to help students learn, connect and decompress from academic stress.

“We want everybody from every background to come and hang out,” added Rohrer. “If you’re ever nervous to attend an event, just come in and start talking to one of the employees. We’d be more than happy to get to know you.”

For more information, students can visit the Leavitt Center’s Instagram page or website. Those interested in getting involved with sustainability on campus can connect with the SUU Sustainability Club or the SUU Community Garden.
