First-ever Thunderfest kicks off the new athletic year

Even though classes are only just starting at Southern Utah University, the sports calendar is already in full swing. The SUU Athletic Department held the first-ever Thunderfest outside the America First Event Center on Tuesday, Sept. 2, which offered games, food, prizes and more to all Thunderbirds.

Members of each SUU sport attended to add to the school spirit. The basketball teams got shots up with fans while other teams like track and field or golf were in charge of food tents and face painting stations.

There were also a variety of local food trucks, a bouncy castle, corn hole setups and more, making it a great evening for young and old sports fans alike. For anybody who missed out, though, the athletics department wanted to inform it has more in store.

“Looking forward to events where our department has the privilege of meeting our community and getting them excited for our seasons,” they said on social media. This was only the first Thunderfest, but it has a chance to become a regular event thanks to the high turnout.

Upcoming events

In terms of other special sports events that are upcoming, the football team will host a special giveaway on Saturday, Sept. 5. The first 1,000 people in attendance will receive a “Storm the Sky” rally towel to commemorate SUU’s return to the Big Sky Conference.

In addition, the women’s basketball team will host a Meet the T-Birds event on Friday, Oct. 30. There will be a business casual dinner, a Q&A session with head coach Tracy Mason, a silent auction and a chance to meet the members of the team. That will be at 5:30 p.m. in the Student Center ballroom.
