Students discovers new hobbies at the SUU Club Fair

All clubs from Southern Utah University filled the Sharwan Smith Student Center on Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the first SUU Club Fair. The event invited students to learn more about the various organizations that make up campus life.

The fair hosted more than 42 clubs. Extending from the living room area to the upper level of the Rotunda, students had the opportunity to ask questions, meet members and explore plenty of new interests.

Braylea Conover, director of social clubs, shared her enthusiasm about the event’s success and student participation.

“I think my favorite thing was walking around and talking to all my clubs,” said Conover. “It was just really good to see them out getting involved and talking to the students.”

Each club found creative ways to attract new members. The Army ROTC offered students the chance to sample military rations and compete in a challenge to lift Thor’s hammer, while other tables handed out candy, flyers and small prizes.

Among the many organizations present was Camp Kesem, SUU’s chapter of a national nonprofit that supports children whose parents have been affected by cancer.

“We did have a good amount of students coming, and it was just fun to share what we do and see people light up and say, ‘Oh my goodness, that’s awesome—we’d love to be part of that,” said Luke Groscost, Camp Kesem’s chapter president.

As part of the fair, students could take part in a raffle. They had to obtain 15 signatures from the clubs and submit a form for a chance to win a gift card or an SUU hoodie.

“Before I was a club director, I was only a part of a couple of clubs, and I would always feel so embarrassed to go,” added Conover. “But, honestly, people want you there. The club presidents, directors and everybody want you to go. They want you to get involved.”

The club fair allows students to discover new hobbies, network and learn how to manage academic and extracurricular activities.

If students have additional questions or want to start their own club, check the SUU Clubs App or stop by the Student Involvement and Leadership Office located in room 177 of the Student Center.
