SUMA Unveils New Exhibition

The Southern Utah Museum of Art has opened its new exhibition.

The exhibit, titled the “2025 Filmmaking, Art & Design Faculty Exhibition”, showcases a variety of pieces done by faculty artists. The pieces range from pottery to photography, and encompass a wide variety of topics, from landscapes to portraits.

According to SUMA employee Jordan, the exhibit took around three weeks to set up, a daunting process that involved patching holes, painting the walls and carefully transporting the pieces. She and her coworker Stevie have been working at SUMA since August, and are studying art at Southern Utah University. When asked what prompted them to pursue the job, both cited their appreciation for art, and their love of the building.

When asked about their favorite pieces in the exhibition, Jordan pointed to a piece that consisted of nine prints showcasing a horse amidst the desert, accented by colors of orange, red and yellow. Stevie, on the other hand, mentioned a series of sculptures depicting a jaguar in great detail amongst his favorites.

The employees aren’t the only ones who found pieces in the collection to appreciate. Rachel, avisitor of the museum was drawn to the various paintings of flowers depicted, citing the vibrant colors as the reason she enjoyed them. In contrast, her friend Karen pointed to a painting of a mountain entitled “Stoccato”.

“I like how the painting depicts the landscape pointing upward,” she said.

She explained how we often see depictions of the landscape “settling,” and she appreciated the contrast the painting offered.

All of these pieces and more can be seen at SUMA The exhibition will run from Oct. 18 to Mar. 7. In addition to the collection, the museum is showcasing a piece celebrating Día de los Muertos, in which attendees can bring family pictures to add to the museum’s ofrenda.
