The first Candlelight Yoga event of the semester took place on Friday, Sept. 5, in SUU’s dance studio at 8 p.m., and the activity left participants feeling rejuvenated and relaxed.
Danielle Lydia Sheather, a certified yoga instructor and SUU dance professor, led the late-night class in the hopes that attendees would leave having found peace that they could apply to the everyday aspects of their lives.
Yoga is so much more than physical practice to Sheather.
“It is attempting to live your life in an honorable way, where we seek self-actualization,” she said. “That pursuit is what keeps up my daily practice of yoga.”
Yoga is still proven to be beneficial to someone’s physical and emotional well-being, despite being an ancient practice. Students Kalli Miles and Kate Erickson participated in the yoga night, and they both left feeling ready to take on the week ahead.
“I was so stressed out, and then I came here and seriously in the first 15 minutes, I felt better than I have this whole week,” said Erickson.
This candlelight yoga event was an opportunity to slow down and focus on oneself.
“We move so quickly these days, as if more is better, faster gets it done, etc.,” Sheather added. “Slowing down and taking a beat can really help to focus on what is important and what can perhaps be abandoned for an improved state of mind.”
Candlelight Yoga nights will occur on the first Friday of each month during the fall semester, with the next event taking place on Oct. 3 at 8 p.m. $5 donations are suggested at the door, and all of the proceeds go towards supporting the university’s dance program.
