The Great American Stampede brings rodeo spirit to Cedar City

Cedar City turned into rodeo central on Sept. 5 and 6 as the Great American Stampede took over Cross Hollow Arena. The two-night event packed the stands with fans ready for high-energy action and a taste of western tradition.

Each event had fans on edge. Riders and ropers showcased their talent, and the crowd gasped at every close call.

Friday night did not go how the rodeo cowboys had planned. A heavy, unexpected rainstorm began, and Friday night’s events were cut short. The rodeo was forced to move the remaining events to Saturday morning, where the athletes competed without an audience.

The crowd made up for the lost action. Saturday night had full stands, loud music and rowdy fans.

The Casperson Mini Bulls were a highlight of the Saturday night show. Kids as young as 7 years old competed for a crowd of their cheering fans.

The Stampede was the perfect night out for students and families due to the affordable tickets and food. Everyone had plenty of time to grab a bite to eat and check out the vendors when the gates opened at 5 p.m. The Lions Club Concessions served some of the best rodeo staples.

The excitement did not end after Saturday’s rodeo. SUU Swing kept the fun going with a dirt dance right outside the arena.

The Great American Stampede proved that rodeo is an important part of SUU and Cedar City’s culture. For more information on the stampede and SUU’s rodeo team, visit the team’s Instagram.
