At Southern Utah University, art is taught frequently through a variety of mediums and formats. There are several classes that focus on creativity and its process across all types of majors.
Under the Studio Arts bachelor’s degree, one class offered is Photography Principles: Black and White/ Darkroom. Although the creative photography process has become digital, the skills learned in film photography are still applicable today. Students will learn basic darkroom techniques, including black and white film development, making contact sheets
and printing with an enlarger as they explore and respond to the visual qualities of the medium. It is worth three credit hours and is offered during the fall and spring semesters.
Additionally, the English department offers Intermediate and Advanced Poetry Writing courses. This creative writing course is focused on technique and the development of poetic voice through the writing, study and workshopping of traditional and contemporary forms. The Intermediate Poetry Writing class is offered during the fall semester and the Advanced Poetry Writing class is offered in the spring.
Although many would not think of communication as an artistically oriented degree, a class like Advanced Video and Film Production would argue otherwise. This class focuses on concentrated work in on-location film and video productions. Work includes long format news, online, sports, public affairs, narrative, experimental and documentary productions.
Southern Utah University has a wide array of career opportunities and art is woven into each of them. Michaelangelo once wrote, “I’m still learning.” The classes offered at SUU, allow students to continue learning and developing their skills in order to become a professional in their field.
