Cedar City, Utah, experienced a heavy cloudburst over the weekend of Sept. 5-7 which led to flash flooding, road safety hazards and damage to student apartments.
Around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, a heavy storm broke out in town, causing rivers of water on roads and sidewalks. Precipitation peaked at 0.3 inches, with wind speeds exceeding 30 mph.
The unexpected amount of rain put a damper on multiple local events. The second to last Green Show at the Utah Shakespeare Festival was canceled and the Great American Stampede Rodeo had to end their Friday night events and resume the following morning.
“I’m grateful that I live on the top floor of my apartment building,” said SUU student, Olivia Brown. “The students on the lower and bottom floors experienced bad flooding in their apartments after the storm on Friday.”
There are a few things that students can do to better recover from any flooding that might have happened this last weekend.
It is important for anyone who was involved in a flood to make sure all of their belongings are dry. This can prevent mold and further damage.
Additionally, students can take photos of any damage caused by flooding in apartment buildings. This can assist building managers repair damages and assure that there will be no unresolved issues.
