Hear ye! Hear ye! The University hosts Medieval Market for the first time in three years

Hundreds of students gathered for this year’s Medieval Market, held on September 17 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the upper quad of campus. All students were able to enjoy a delightful night full of food, artwork, jousting and other events.

The Medieval Market takes students back to Renaissance times, where they were highly encouraged to dress up and play the part. Many took the opportunity to style their flower crowns, swords, cloaks and other Medieval Garb. For those who are not the dress-up type, the market offered many other ways to enjoy their journey back in time, such as seeing all of the items sold by market vendors.

Vendors signed up months prior to claim their spot for the market. These vendors included student artists sharing their skills and creations with others attending the event. Local businesses were also highlighted, such as Phat Ax Throwing and a permanent jewelry company.

A majority of the artwork spotlighted included handmade rings, beaded bracelets and necklaces, keychains and other jewelry. These served as affordable souvenirs to remember the night while supporting fellow students. Artists also sold things like caricature drawings and hand sewn bags.

Additionally, students could enjoy a selection of homemade baked goods made by student vendors. Sandwiches and chips were also provided for free from the university, as well as giant turkey legs.

Alexis Garcia, event director for the Student Programming Board, explained that this year’s Medieval Market was “a revamp of an event we did three years ago.”

This year, the event was greatly expanded, adding significantly more vendors and attractions for students to enjoy.

“After we pitched the idea, everyone was super excited and we ran with it,” Garcia added.

SUU will host many more events similar to this throughout the semester. To stay updated, students can visit the SUU Event Calendar. The Student Programming Board is located in the Sharwan Smith Student Center, Suite 177, for anyone interested in learning about the student life here on campus.
