The Belonging and Engagement Council shares BAE-gels with the student body

Southern Utah University Student Association’s new Belonging and Engagement Council hosted a BAE-gels with B.A.E. event at the Library Plaza on Wednesday, Sept.18 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Students were invited to get a free bagel and learn about this new resource on campus.

The purpose of the event was to raise awareness of the BAE Council and MySUU Voice, a new platform available on MySUU Portal where students can be heard by the university about concerns, thoughts, desires and complaints.

“Our job is to help people find a place on campus. So this was our best way of ensuring students to feel a sense of community and belonging.,” said Paige Iverson, vice president of the BAE Council. “We’re planning a few more activities, but ultimately we want students to come to us to see what they want. This is a great opportunity to allow them to help us figure out what this council is gonna look like.”

SUUSA implemented the BAE Council for students seeking a sense of community on campus. Located in the Student Involvement and Leadership Office, the council is ready to be present for Southern Utah University students.

“It’s gonna look different from previous years but we’re hoping that we can really establish our community council and have this be an everlasting council at SUU,” Iverson added.

Due to Utah’s implementation of House Bill 261, SUU had to close its Center for Diversity and Inclusion and Q Center.

The BAE-gel event had something for everyone. The council provided participants with various flavors of rice cake as gluten free options. For toppings, jam, peanut butter, whipped creams, honey and more were available.

With other events throughout the school year, the BAE Council looks forward to welcoming students and settling in on campus. In October, the committee is considering holding a folklore night to share students’ unique cultures.
