SPB sparks nostalgia across campus with Disney dance

On Feb. 23, Southern Utah University turned back the clock to the golden age with the Student Programming Board’s Disney Dance. The event took place in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Ballroom from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Participants were taken on a trip down memory lane with tunes from their childhood and teenage years.

“(We decided to come because) we thought that a Disney Channel theme dance seemed super fun and very nostalgic,” said Natalie Watson, attendee at the event.

Upon arrival, students were greeted with a variety of glasses with different patterns to complete their decade-inspired outfits. Between leggings of all colors, layered skirts, jeans and knee-high socks, many played along and dressed the part.

“It was super fun,” said Watson’s friend, Lily Stanley. “The refreshments were a nice touch and the glasses were really helpful, especially with the strobing lights.”

To immortalize the moment, several photo booths were available. There was a “Teen Beach Movie,” “High School Musical,” “Lizzie McGuire” and  Disney Channel photo booth. A replica of the Mickey Mouse icon allowed students to fulfill their childhood and drawDisney Channel’s logo.

“We’re just party girls. We love to come out and dance,” added Stanley. “We go to all these dances, but the Disney soundtrack is what we came here for.”

Needless to mention, they were not disappointed as the TV channel’s greatest hits were played. “High School Musical’s” “Bet on It,” “Descendants 2’s” “What’s My Name,” “Teen Beach Movie’s” “Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’” and more, echoed throughout the room. Students did not hesitate to show off their dance moves.

Other classics, such as “Determinate” fromLemonade Mouth” and “We’re All in This Together” from “High School Musical” were played while students danced the conga.

To conclude the evening, Hannah Montana’s “Best of Both Worlds” soundtrack was played. From the first two notes of the song, loud cheers erupted, and students sang along at the top of their lungs.

SPB hosts a variety of diverse events throughout the year and this will not be the last. The upcoming event, Casino Night, is one of the most popular ones in the spring semester, so keep an eye out for announcements.
