On Wednesday, Jan. 14, Southern Utah University’s International Office announced the creation of its International Support Group. The event takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. every Wednesday in the Escalante Room of the Sharwan Smith Student Center.
Created by Charissa Novasel, International Affairs/CAPS Staff Therapist, this group aims to provide support to international students by answering their questions and offering them opportunities to socialize.
“I wanted to open a space that allows them to connect and have support,” said Novasel. “It is a very different experience having to adjust to a whole new culture and try to deal with classes and Cedar City.”

This group offers a chance for international students to connect and build a sense of community.
“We’re kind of opening it because I would like it to be led by the students at the same time,” added Novasel.
Along with this support group, students can see Novasel at weekly meetings for advice, resource contacts and more. Every Tuesday she offers a stress and coping support table in the Global Landing Room. Participants can use stress toys, eat sour candies and do some coloring to manage stress and emotions.
45-minute walk-ins are also available:
— Mondays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
— Tuesdays from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
— Fridays from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
For more information about these various services, students can visit the International Office in the Sharawn Smith Student Center or check their website.
