SUU Ballroom brings culture and energy to the stage

Southern Utah University’s ballroom concert, Dancing in the Moonlight, lit up the stage Nov. 7 and 8 with a mix of rhythm, culture and artistry.

The showcase featured dances performed by the SUU Ballroom Tour Team, Intermediate Ballroom Team, the SUU Dance Team and the Indigenous Student Association.

The show’s diverse lineup included styles ranging from Latin fusion and waltz to samba, tango, ballet, jive, foxtrot, cha cha, and lindy hop. Each number highlighted the performers’ hard work and passion.

For tour team member Peaches Ramsay, the night was especially meaningful.

“I’m really excited about performing tonight. My family and friends are here to support me, and I couldn’t be happier,” said Ramsay before the show. “While I am a little nervous, I’m turning those nerves into excitement.”

Ramsay’s favorite dance of the evening was the Jive. She enjoys the energy put into the piece by the dancers and the fun choreography that pairs perfectly with the music. Fellow dancer Maddox Thompson joined the ballroom team after hearing about tryouts from a friend.

“The most challenging part for me has been cleaning up the choreography,” he said. “Some of it didn’t click in my head until opening night.”

The group has been practicing since the beginning of September, and that dedication showed in their performances.

“Practicing in the studio is completely different than performing on stage in front of an audience,” Ramsay said. “On performance nights, the energy is electrical because now we get to show off what we’ve been working on for so long. I use that excitement to fuel my dancing.”

Attendee Nesi McKenzie summed up the experience best:

“The whole show was so lively and fun, I really think everyone would enjoy the performances.”
