Bread and Soup Nite, the fundraiser for the HOPE pantry, was held by the Community Engagement Center on Oct. 6, from 5-7 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Ballroom.
The event served all-you-can-eat food, including southwest-style chicken soup, potato soup, many types of bread and a variety of desserts. There was live guitar and singing from Southern Utah University students and an attendance in the hundreds.
Bread and Soup Nite raises money to help the pantry combat food insecurity and poverty among the university student body. Tickets are $3 or $1 if attendees bring a non-perishable food item for the pantry.
The SUU HOPE pantry, which stands for Help Our People Eat, was founded in 2002. It was the first campus-based food pantry in Utah and one of the first in the United States. They help 250-375 students receive food and toiletries every week, which costs them over $10,000 per week.
SUU students who want to use the HOPE pantry can go to room 120 in the Sharwan Smith Student Center, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to sign a year-long user agreement. This lets them use their SUU ID to take around $40-50 worth of food and bathroom items per week from any HOPE pantry location.
Cedar City residents can visit the HOPE Pantry website to learn about the cause, donate, see accepted items and sign up to volunteer. For more information about the Community Engagement Center and to volunteer for the next Bread and Soup Nite on Nov. 3, go to the CEC website.
