To kick off the fall season, the Southern Utah University Student Programming Board hosted the event “Pumpkins After Dark” in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Living Room on Tuesday, Oct. 7. Students were invited to celebrate the start of October with creativity and the community.
The space was filled with tables, painting supplies and pumpkins waiting to be transformed into works of art. Students got to pick their favorite pumpkin, choose three colors of paint and let their imagination guide them.

“I was invited by a friend, a little bit last minute, but the event was a great spontaneous thing to do,” said Bella Isimbi, a sophomore at SUU. “I just decided to do a little ghost, but a cute ghost and I did a great painting for sure. I had so much fun.”
While some students found inspiration on Pinterest or from movies, such as A Nightmare Before Christmas, Mean Girls and Alice in Wonderland, others decided to paint portraits of their friends. Alyssa Fielding, an attendee at the event, decided to paint her friend Stratton White.
“My inspiration was Stratton. He was tabling at this event and so we all just went up to say hi and he was like, ‘y’all should picture my face and see who can do it the prettiest, and I was like, bet, so I did it,” shared Fielding.
The room was filled with students showcasing their talents. Some groups even spread out onto the stairs near the dining hall.
“We were actually thinking of painting pumpkins earlier in the week and so when we actually saw this, we were like, ‘Oh, well, speak of the devil’ and so that’s why we came,” said SUU student Emma-Lee Earl.
Along with the creative activities, the event also featured a “Guess the Music” challenge as well as fall-themed snacks. Attendees were offered Halloween pumpkin cookies, hot cocoa and candies to truly prepare for the fall season.
The SUU Student Programming Board plans to host more fall-themed events in the coming weeks. For more information on upcoming events, check out the SUU event calendar and the SPB Instagram page.
