On Monday, Sept. 22, Southern Utah University hosted its annual Homecoming Kickoff Party on the Library Quad from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students were invited to grab snacks and relax while playing some yard games.
Along with beach-themed music, the event featured hot dogs, flavored waters, nachos and Tiki Shack snowcones. Participants took part in various activities, such as Power 4, Tetris and a dunk tank, while eating.
“I liked the line for the nachos, because there was good music and I was dancing,” said Coralie Flandrina, attendee at the event. ”Plus, it was actually cheesy, so it was really good.”
The lines to access the stands stretched past the sidewalk and in between the trees. With more than 500 students showing up, the party was a victim of its own success. After 30-minutes the event ran out of hotdogs and the staff was forced to cut the line.
“If you say there’s food there, any student will come. Free food is our tactic with every event,” said Student Programming Board Director Kylee Sutherland. “People will come and I think that’s just great, it is honestly something I would do too.”
Students came to enjoy the activity and take photos for the Tradition Keeper program. As they participate, they receive rewards that can be collected in Suite 103 of the Hunter Alumni Center.
“(My favorite moment) during the event was for sure the dunk tank. It has been so funny watching them get in the water,” added Sutherland. “We had Landon, our student body president, do it for 30 minutes and he was awesome.”

With laughter, music and food, this event kicked off homecoming week on a lively note.
“I am super excited for homecoming, there will be events the whole week,” said Flandrina.
More information on upcoming events can be found on the school’s website.
