Financial Wellness Center promotes falling in love with finances

The Financial Wellness Center provided tips and tackled the hardships of managing finances within a relationship at their event “Love and Money” on Feb. 12.

The discussion began with introductions from the real-life couple presenting: Ashleigh Zimmerman and Magnum Morgan, both staff at Southern Utah University.

They provided insights into the different ways of managing finances and encouraged students to find what works best for them. Zimmerman explained every couple’s situation is unique and managing styles work for everyone differently.

Managing styles can entail sharing bank accounts or keeping finances separate. Another question for financing is how to balance saving for the future versus living for the now.

Couples often have to navigate the differing styles of managing money.

Three-year couple Brady Stromberg, a filmmaking junior, and Erin Petersen, an English education sophomore, attended the event together in hopes of learning more about the possibility of combining their finances.

“Communication is the most important thing,” Stromberg says. “Nothing should be withheld from your partner and both parties should feel comfortable and secure.”

Petersen elaborated on this, emphasizing the importance of compromise within that communication.

“It’s important to be open with your partner about what your goals and priorities are,” Petersen says. “Finding common ground will remind you both that you’re on the same team.”

Students can schedule an appointment at the Financial Wellness Center for help with budgeting, financial goal setting, applying for FAFSA, and more. They host an “Eat Pie and Apply” night monthly where students can apply for FAFSA while enjoying a slice of pie.
