Folklore night unites students in a spooky celebration of culture and community

A mystical evening of storytelling and connection lit up Southern Utah University’s Kolob Canyon Living Room on Halloween night as the campus hosted its first-ever Folklore Night. Organized by the Belonging and Engagement Council, the event welcomed students to share legends, myths and tales from their backgrounds, creating an environment rich with mystery, magic, and camaraderie.

This event aimed to unite students by offering a unique twist on Halloween festivities, emphasizing unity and cultural exchange.

“With Halloween upon us, we were wondering what event could both engage students and lean into the ‘spooky season’ aesthetics,” explained Sydney Crystal, SUU Student Association’s programming director. “The result was Folklore Night, which allows students to share stories from their cultures and upbringing while learning about others’ traditions, myths, folklore, and legends.”

The night allowed students to sign up for an open mic, where they could tell both eerie and enlightening stories from their heritage or experiences. To maintain an inclusive atmosphere, students were encouraged to avoid excessive gore and to use trigger warnings if necessary, ensuring everyone felt comfortable participating. Stories ranged from chilling family legends to light-hearted myths.

SUU student Tanner Corbridge, who shared a story, said, “We have such a diverse campus, so I’m very excited to hear all the different stories people have to share, and being Halloween night makes it even more fun!”

The event provided posters with tales from around the world for anyone who wished to read and explore, allowing students to immerse themselves in folklore even if the open mic ran short on time.

Beyond the evening’s supernatural theme, Folklore Night aimed to forge connections and build community among students.

Crystal emphasized the broader vision of the event: “By allowing students to share these stories, we hope to give students a space to learn about one another and grow closer in the process.”

The night proved a magical opportunity for students to share, connect, and celebrate diverse stories, fostering a stronger sense of belonging on campus.
