Orchestra of Southern Utah to perform spooky-themed concerts

The Orchestra of Southern Utah will be performing their first two concerts of their season on Oct. 10 and 12 at the Heritage Center Theatre. “Haunting Resonance” will take place on Oct. 10 at 7:30 p.m., with their “Spooky Spectacular” Children’s Jubilee at 2 p.m. Oct. 12.

Both concerts are directed by Carylee Zwang and will both feature musical pieces “Danse Macabre,” “Night on Bald Mountain,” “Ride on Valkyries” and “In the Hall of the Mountain King.”

“Haunting Resonance” will feature music from “Psycho” and an arrangement of the “Stranger Things” theme created by OSU’s Resident Composer Jacob Lee. It will also feature “Isle of the Dead.”

The concert is supported by many organizations, helping to make tickets cheaper. Amy Gold, an OSU manager, says, “We appreciated this support so we can keep the ticket prices at a lower level. A similar concert in a city would be much more expensive.”

Additionally, Gold notes, “We also appreciate our musicians for their dedication and service. They make the music possible.”

The lobby music will feature Tanisa Crosby on flute and April Richardson on clarinet, both of whom have played for many community events.

“Spooky Spectacular” will also have a Musical Spook Alley and activities before the concert from noon to 1:50 p.m. Along with stage makeup and mask making, OSU Board Member Wendy Sanders will direct an exploration of the art of sound effects with instruments and household objects. The Jubilee will also be accepting non-perishable food donations for the HOPE Pantry.

In regard to the Jubilee, OSU President Harold Shirley says, “The Jubilees have provided memorable family afternoons since 2004 and received national recognition. This is a wonderful way to introduce children to the excitement of live music with our orchestra.”

Previews of the music can be found here. Both events are open to children six and older. Tickets for both events can be found on myosu.org. Tickets for “Haunting Resonance” are $15 for adults and $10 for students, and are free for “Spooky Spectacular.”
