On Friday, Sept. 13, Southern Utah University’s Graphic Design club hosted the “Chalk-the-Walk” fundraiser competition from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Participants purchased their spot on the library’s sidewalk and drew what inspired them. The theme was: “This is where we soar.”
Open to anyone willing to use their imagination, students were able to sign up individually or in pairs to sketch in 7×7-foot spaces. Once the competition was over, each chalk drawing was judged by art professors: Danielle Rante, Eric Brown and Chris Graves. The scoring categories were formed by interpretation of the theme, inner creativity and technique. The top contestants received prizes such as hammocks for two and gift cards to their favorite local businesses.
Junior at SUU, Isabella Sanchez took part in this innovative activity.
“This sounded fun and I love drawing, so we’re doing Thor next to the bell tower,” said Sanchez. “I think it’s gonna take us at least 4 hours, but I really want the hammocks haha.”
Throughout the day Several works of chalk art took shape, including Spiderman, an eagle surrounded by lightning, hot-air balloons and even the house in the animated film “Up”. Hope Thomas, president of the Graphic Design club, was excited about the passion students were exhibiting.

“It’s fun to plan events and get people more involved. So, we wanted something more accessible to students but also to show people artistic talent, and we thought this was a good way,” said Thomas. ”Anyone can come out, draw chalk and participate. People are killing it, they’re doing great work and I think it’s cool to show off the art.”
Thomas mentioned that this was the first time the club was doing the fundraiser, but she hopes this will become a tradition.
“I’m sure it will be awesome to have this as a traditional event, every year, like a month into school,” added Thomas.
Often launching several activities, the Graphic Design club gives everyone the opportunity to experiment. These moments include the creation of stickers, t-shirt design, buttons, shots for magazines and much more. Last year a trip was taken to visit one of Adobe offices.
The event brought a colorful touch to campus, and the Graphic Design Club doesn’t intend to stop there. More information on upcoming activities is available on their Instagram.
