On Saturday, March 9, Second Studio, Southern Utah University’s student-run theatre company, held their final normal “SUU Live” of the semester, titled “Sidekick Showdown: Duos and Trios.”
“SUU Live” is a monthly variety show put on by Second Studio’s Showcase Manager Spencer Smith and Showcase Director Abbie Cochrane, allowing SUU students to display their talents and creativity.
“The diversity of acts in this “SUU Live” was so much more engaging and interesting than previous ones,” said Smith. “Forcing people to get scene partners forced them to get more creative. I loved the creativity.”
This month’s “SUU Live” featured four duos and two trios, some of which utilized things outside the lights and sound normally used in “SUU Live”.
“Because it was the last “SUU Live”, and it used to be so different in the past, we wanted to show people that you can do just about anything besides singing. Even if you want to sing, you can spice it up or add in the audience,” said Mary Anderson, who did an act with their roommate revolving around the “Five Nights at Freddy’s” franchise.

“Sidekick Showdown” also featured non-musical acts, such as a Shakespeare reimagining put on by Smith and fellow classmate Sophia Weaver.
“We were assigned to read ‘Henry IV Part I’ [in class], and we made a joke that it sounded like a Wild West scene,” said Weaver. “And we were like, ‘We could do that for “SUU Live”; it would be silly.’”
Because this “SUU Live” had less acts than the typical showcase, it was much more casual and featured some unplanned acts as well.
“I loved how relaxed it was,” said Cochrane. “We were able to do a little PowerPoint night that we added last minute.”
The final “SUU Live” of the semester, “Best Of,” will be held after the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Arts Administration’s end-of-year gala on April 17. To stay up to date with Second Studio, follow them on Instagram.
