Conserve Southwest Utah is hosting a National Public Lands Day event this Saturday, Sept. 26, beginning at 8 a.m. and ending at noon.
The event is a tamarisk reduction project in Zion National Park. Tamarisk is an invasive species of tree that salinizes soil and depletes underground water tables.
Orientation begins at 8 a.m. at the non-public Zion Plant Nursery, with carpooling to the Virgin River worksite.
The organization recommends wearing sunscreen, sun-protective clothing and a hat due to planned prolonged sun exposure. Tools will be provided onsite.
“The project site will be uneven, rocky and muddy,” CSU says. “Bring gloves and wear long sleeves to protect your hands and arms from scratches. You must also bring a pair of boots or shoes in a bag that you can change into/out of that will get very wet and muddy.”
Water and snacks will be provided at the worksite along with a pizza lunch at the Springdale Park following the event, for all who register before Sept. 24.
Registration closes Friday, Sept. 25, at 9 a.m. To register or to learn more, visit CSU’s website.
