SUU students bring Shakespeare to the radio

A small team of students are bringing Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” to the audio stage. The group of four are enrolled in the Audio Practicum class, which gives students hands-on opportunities to work with the campus radio station Thunder 91.1.

Student Alora Bailey, who is rewriting the script of “Hamlet” to put a more modern twist on it, says this is not her first rodeo.

“I have made two episodes of a personal podcast with SFX (sound effects) as an experiment and found out that I loved creating that surround sound,” said Bailey. “I love immersing the listeners and making them feel like they are in the room while listening.”

The audio serial team, as they have come to call themselves, originally formed at the start of the semester after working on a production of Orson Welles’ “War of the Worlds” last fall. They’ve already encountered some difficulties; Time has been the hardest factor for Bailey.

“As it turns out, only having four people on your team who are all busy with other college obligations is hard when managing a team of 20+ actors,” Bailey said.

The team aims to have their five-episode drama ready for Thunder 91 listeners by the end of the semester. Bailey hopes that listeners will have an easier time engaging with Shakespeare’s famous play thanks to modern language.
