Ava Tiessen-Roodbol is a junior at Southern Utah University, who transferred to the university to play setter for the women’s volleyball team. Originally from Canada, she left Toronto to pursue her education and career goals.
She currently studies hospitality and tourism, concentrated in lodging and resort management, with a minor in business management.
“I hope to play professional volleyball, then own a hotel—managing one first—somewhere warm,” said Tiessen-Roodbol.
Despite her passion, her daily routine involves intense dedication, consisting of early mornings and late nights to fulfill her roles as a student and an athlete.
“A typical day in my life is hectic,” said Tiessen-Roodbol. “I start my day at 5:30 a.m., go to practice, study hall, multiple classes, a weight lifting session and volunteer at elementary schools and nursing homes most days.”
She emphasized the importance of organization in balancing her life. Her approach to self-management involves multiple calendars, keeping lists, using her study resources, open communication with professors and coaches and a disciplined weekday routine.
Between school and athletics, she sets aside time to cook, travel the U.S. and abroad, connect with fellow students and give back to the community.
Tiessen-Roodbol shared experiencing some challenges and barriers as an international student, thanking her team for improving her experience.
“My coaches were phenomenal and so were my teammates with helping me transition and creating that welcoming environment,” she said.
Through her commitment to SUU, she has gained an appreciation for Cedar City.
“I was surprised by the beauty of the mountains, the sunny blue skies, the early spring warmth and just how welcoming the people are,” Tiessen-Roodbol said. “Canadians are known for being nice, but the same thing is here– just that small town charm and I love it.”
SUU women’s volleyball will return to the court this fall playing in the Big Sky Conference.
