Southern Utah University has a new space where students can put their dancing skills to the test and let themselves be carried away by the rhythm of salsa. The Salsa Dance Club has officially arrived on campus and offers sessions every Thursday at 8 p.m. in Room 303 of the PE Building.
The initiative was started by a group of students who come from countries where Salsa is a cultural pillar. Noticing that this genre is not very common in Cedar City, they decided to come together to share this passion with others who are unfamiliar with it.
“Me and my friends came from a place where we are used to dancing Salsa on a common basis,” said Club President Franco Sanchez Pachas. “To be honest, here it is not that common, that’s the main reason why we created the Salsa club.”
This project is special to the organizing team, as it goes beyond a simple dance class; it is a window into their own culture and passions.
“I have liked to dance since I was 8, so dance was always present in me,” said Adriana Gomez, a member of the organizing team.“I think this is such a special project.”
This new space is committed to a purely social and non-competitive atmosphere, where the main objective is to learn without pressure. The session on March 5 captured this spirit. After instructors taught simple, basic steps, the night concluded with a pizza gathering to get to know each other.
For those who feel inspired by this project, SUU facilitates the creation of new clubs through the Student Involvement and Leadership Office. There, you will receive more information on how to create your own club.
