Student Employment 101

From lab assistants to videographers and tutors to custodians, Southern Utah University offers dozens of on-campus jobs for students.

“It’s really nice because I can go straight from work to classes or vice versa,” said Chick-Fil-A Employee Valerie Theriault. “Also, getting to meet practically the entire student body every single day is really fun.”

International students also have access to on-campus work, depending on their visa status. Students holding F-1 or J-1 visas are permitted to work, while those on F-2 visas are not authorized to work in the U.S.

“For international students like me, I think working on campus is a great way to earn some money while being here, meet people from different backgrounds and feel more immersed in life in the U.S.,” said Testing Center Assistant Tikvah Kalder. “The more international students get involved around campus, the more inclusive and welcoming the campus community becomes over time.”

Undergraduate students may have up to two active campus positions and must be enrolled in at least six credit hours to be eligible for employment.

SUU student employees keep track of their hours through the university’s online portal. While classes are in session, students are limited to 20 hours total per week, regardless if they have one or two jobs. During academic breaks, the weekly limit increases to 40 hours.

To help students improve their job search skills, the SUU Career Center offers services to find employment opportunities both on campus and elsewhere in Cedar City.

Students interested in applying for on-campus jobs can visit the T-Bird Campus Jobs tab on their SUU portal.
