For one night, Southern Utah University students got to step into the Emerald City during “Wicked Night,” an event hosted by the Student Programming Board on Nov. 18. The event was held in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Ballroom to celebrate the release of “Wicked: For Good” coming to theaters this week.
The ballroom was decorated in signature shades of green and pink, letting participants fully dive into the world of Glinda and Elphaba. Tables were decorated with flowers of both colors and signs quoting famous lines of the movie, such as “Toss Toss,” said by Glinda.
While listening to the musical’s soundtrack, participants enjoyed dyed pancakes to match the characters, along with craft activities such as pipe cleaner tulips and coloring pages. Students also got the opportunity to take pictures at the photobooth with props inspired by the film.
“(The event) had a really good turnout,” said SPB Director Brighton Torgerson. “I’ve had lots of crafts for people to do, so it’s not really limited and people can express their creativity, so it was really fun.”
As people were crafting, the event turned into a watch party and attendees watched the first movie while singing along to the songs.
“My thought about the movie in general is that it’s pretty interesting because I didn’t know there was a whole backstory to the whole Wizard of Oz, and I didn’t even know that Glinda and Elphaba were friends,” said Savanna Dee, an attendee at the event. “I’m excited for the next movie to come out.”
“Wicked: For Good” hits Megaplex theaters this Wednesday, Nov. 19. The movie runs 2 hours and 17 minutes and will wrap up Glinda and Elphaba’s story. Tickets are already available and selling fast, so check the theater’s website to catch it at the beginning.
