Canyon Trio performs for Southern Utah University

Canyon Trio performed a recital for students and faculty at Southern Utah University on Thursday, Oct. 30, at 7:30 p.m.

The performance was held in the Thorley Recital Hall, located in the music building on SUU campus. The group featured Paul Abegg on violin, Trevor Davis on clarinet and Tracey Bradshaw on piano.

The trio played a variety of pieces and movements, encompassing a wide range of styles, from slower, more meditative pieces to fast and energetic compositions.

They began with an arrangement made specifically for violin, clarinet and piano and followed it with a piece titled “Visions of the Aboriginal Dreamtime.” They then performed another suite by composer Alexander Arutiunian, and concluded the recital with “The Entertainer,” by Scott Joplin.

Andrew Briggs, a choir teacher in attendance, thought the performance was terrific.

“There were sounds that I wasn’t accustomed to hearing, but I thought it was executed quite well,” said Briggs. He cited the third movement as his favorite, calling it “simply wonderful.”

Trevor Davis, the trio’s clarinet player, explained the process the group went through to execute the performance.

“Last year, I was listening to the radio, and I heard this piece I was unfamiliar with. It was for clarinet, violin and piano, and I said, ‘I really want to perform this,’” he explained. “Tracy and I have played before, and I asked her if she had an idea for a violinist. Dr. Abegg was down at Utah Tech, so we reached out.”

He further explained that they rehearsed only three times together before performing in their concerts, and have plans to perform again in the future.
