SUMA sidekicks learned about abstract art by creating their own paintings on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
SUMA Sidekicks is a free program hosted by the Southern Utah Museum of Art for students of SUU and Southwest Tech. SUMA holds monthly events for the sidekicks to grow creative abilities and connect with artistic minds. This year, SUMA sidekicks is focusing on the history behind abstract art, inspired by SUMA’s permanent collection.
The event allowed students to create mandala rock paintings, get a behind-the-scenes look at artworks pulled from the permanent collection and learn about abstract art history.
Supplies were provided for sidekicks to create their own rock paintings. Leaders also supplied light snacks, drinks and music to elevate the experience.
Attendees found inspiration from the mandala paintings set up around the museum and were encouraged by sidekick leaders to paint with their hearts to make their artistry meaningful.
“I’m an artist but I’m not much of a painter, so this is a little bit outside my comfort zone, but in a way that was fun and relaxing. I’m really proud of how my rock turned out,” said attendee Brenna Goddard.
The purpose of these events is to bring people together to create art, unwind and learn something new.
“It’s a really good opportunity to get out and meet people. I’ve really loved the experience,” Goddard added.
Sidekicks can earn prizes by regularly visiting the museum and attending sidekick events. They are held every second Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. Some prizes included are a sticker, a sketchbook, a poster and an exclusive SUMA hat. Members of the program also receive a 20% discount on the SUMA shop.
The next SUMA Sidekick event is on Nov. 11, where sidekicks will create cubist-inspired masks.
