SUU’s International Affairs office invites students to participate in Diwali celebration

Southern Utah University’s International Affairs office brought light, color and culture to campus during its annual Festival of Lights celebration held Thursday, Oct. 16, in the living room of the Sharwan Smith Student Center.

The event invited students, faculty and staff to learn and take part in the traditions surrounding Diwali, a major Hindu festival celebrated across the globe.

Melissa Montiano, student advisor at SUU’s International Affairs office, explained that the event was designed to promote cultural understanding and create a sense of togetherness.

“It’s a wonderful festival of getting together, eating good food and celebrating light. I hope students try some different food and learn something new,” Montiano said. “Come with an open mind, visit with your fellow T-Birds and have a good time.”

Attendees were treated to a cultural showcase that included traditional Indian cuisine, mehndi hand painting and mandala coloring pages. Event organizers also showcased posters and slideshows with information regarding the history and significance of Diwali.

“I hope everyone learns about Diwali a little bit. They don’t have to celebrate it, but if they can learn something about the event, that would make me happy,” said Abirao, an international student from Nepal.

He also commented on the celebration’s sense of inclusivity.

“It’s usually celebrated between brothers and sisters, but here at SUU, everyone’s kind of like family, so you can see everyone as brothers and sisters,” added Abirao.
