Back for a second year, Southern Utah University’s Medieval Market gathered over a hundred students on Friday, Sept.12 on the upper quad. The event featured many activities, taking students back to Renaissance times.
From axe throwing and sword fighting to hobby horsing and turkey legs, attendees had plenty to immerse themselves in the medieval world. Many seized the opportunity to bring out their best attire, such as flower crowns, corsets and other medieval garb.

To play along with the theme, vendors, ranging from local Cedar City businesses to SUU students, were ready to accessorize participant’s attire with their creations. Jewelry, key chains, tiaras and much more were on display.
“It’s my first time selling anything. Last year I came and I attended, and then this year I was like, I feel like tarot would be super fun to do here,” said Sidney Crystal, SUU student and market vendor. “It’s a good way for students to see vendors on campus and it’s really cool to see what students are making and producing for all of us. ”
Freshmen students at SUU, London Farmer and Mars Gaston, purchased matching crocheted chickens to proudly exhibit in their dorm rooms.
“I feel like it was definitely really well set up. They have a lot of things to do and I really liked that all the students had booths,” said Farmer. “It was super fun and a really good thing to get out of the house for,” added Gaston.
By visiting the booths and participating in the activities, participants collected raffle tickets to have a chance to win two swords, two daggers and tickets for the Shakespeare festivals.
“I think the raffle tickets were a big hit. Just giving away the prizes, it was really fun announcing and having everybody just get so excited about it,” said Student Programming Board director, Ella Hansen. “I think it also kept people here and engaged.”
The SUU Student Programming Board has many more events similar to the Medieval Market planned for this semester. To stay informed, check out the events calendar and follow @suustudentlife on Instagram.
