JAC summer concert series puts on last show of the season

The Johnson Arts Center hosted the last show of its free summer concert series on Friday, Sept. 12.

This year marked the second annual summer concert series the JAC has held, and they finished off the season with bands Silver Flack and Side Note.

Side Note is an a cappella group of four women based in Southern Utah. They performed a cappella renditions of popular songs such as “Mellow Yellow” by Donovan and ABBA’s “Super Trouper.” Utah-based indie alternative band Silver Flack followed them, performing various original tunes, including songs from their most recent album, Eclipse.

“It’s important to care about all kinds of live performances. The arts add so much to a community, they give us a way to express ourselves (…), and it’s just a way to come together and enjoy,” said director Melissa Leavitt.

Concerts took place on the second Friday of each month from June to Sept. to bring people together through a shared love of music. From indie rock to a cappella to jazz, the concert series hosted a diverse group of performers.

“Cedar City is an art-centered city, and we have so many beautiful singing and musical talents here, and we love to be able to showcase them,” said building manager Dave Haley.

The JAC strives to be a gathering place for artists of all kinds to create, learn, teach, mentor, collaborate and build community.

“For me, the Johnson Center was always a dream, and when we’re out there and there’s music playing, and it’s summer, it feels like a dream come true to me. This is what I want to have happen: a place that we can gather and share these kinds of things,” shared Leavitt.

The Johnson Arts Center continues to host its weekly Sok Hop concerts on Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. For more information on these events and other upcoming shows, visit https://www.johnsonartscenter.org/.
