SUU invites high school students to perform with them at Band Day 2025

Southern Utah University will be hosting its annual Sound of Southern Utah Band Day on Saturday, Sept. 13, starting at 2 p.m.

The event gives high school students the opportunity to perform with SUU’s marching band during their football halftime show and experience what college marching band is all about.

“Marching band is very interesting at the college level because it consists of not just music majors, but other majors too, and the whole group comes together and works to put a show on for the community,” said Band Director David Torres.

On Saturday, high school students must bring their own instruments, lyres and/or flip folders to hold your sheet music. In return, the university will provide specially designed t-shirts, necessary music and a meal before the show. The event takes place from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and after registering, students will receive the itinerary of the day.

“The most rewarding part is performing. Once you get everything together and you start performing it regularly for everyone, the crowd loves it. They just go nuts for certain parts of the show because they too realize how hard it is to put together,” said Torres.

SUU’s Thunderbird Marching Band has a mission to “march together with pride and determination to strengthen tradition and build community through performed excellence.” They strive to provide an environment where lifelong friendships can be cultivated while representing the university.

“The amount of people leads to more sound coming out, and we get to have high school students experience playing in a large marching group on a college football field,” said Torres. “It’s about showing what our college experience is like, so they get excited about possibly performing in college when they finish high school.”

Students can sign up to participate by filling out the google form. For more information, contact David Torres at davidtorres2@suu.edu.
