Student Job Expo brings employers to campus

Southern Utah University’s Career and Professional Development Center kicked off the semester with a Student Job Expo on Wednesday, Sept. 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. At this event, employers from around the community met with students in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Ballroom to discuss job opportunities.

Students were encouraged to come to the event with their resumes, prepared to set up job interviews, but were also invited to stop by between classes and just check out what opportunities are available.

Student networking with employer from Havenwood Academy

Employers ranged from Brain Head Ski Resort to the Havenwood Academy, a local therapeutic boarding school. Campus organizations were also invited, showcases a variety of prospects to suit different needs.

“I’ve been to (these job fairs) for the past couple years,” said Dylan Gough, SUU student. “I think it’s pretty helpful to come to just try to find jobs on and around campus and be able to network and meet with different kinds of people.”

Gough mentioned that it can be difficult to find a job as a college student. While many might share this perspective, these events are designed to make the job-search more convenient and accessible for students.

“I’ve found a lot of jobs that could work for me, a lot of work in the field of mental health and stuff that I might be interested in, so overall it’s been pretty helpful,” Gough added.

The expo is not only intended to benefit students, but also local employers. One of the booths available at the event belonged to Possibilities ABA, an organization that offers applied behavioral analysis therapy to children with Autism.

“We’ve had a lot of people interested in jobs and a couple parents interested in services for their kids,” said Possibilities ABA employee, Cheyanne Padilla. “I think it’s good to meet people who might be interested in applying  in the future and get to know the community more.”

The Career Center hosts job expos near the beginning of each semester as well as other activities that bring students and employers together throughout the school year. Upcoming events can be found on the Career Center’s website and Instagram.
