OPUS, the premier mixed-choral ensemble at Southern Utah University, partnered with the string ensemble to perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Magnificat.” The concert was held at Christ the King Catholic Church on Feb. 27 at 7:30 p.m., and was free and open to the public.
Andrew Briggs, director of choral activities, led the choir through 12 pieces, featuring solos, duets and trios, all part of Bach’s “Magnificat.” The performance highlighted the beauty of Bach’s composition, showcasing both vocal and instrumental talents.
“I love the pieces, they’re really beautiful,” said Savannah Billeter, who has been an OPUS member for over three years. “It’s fun to perform with an orchestra. We usually only play with piano, but having violins and trumpets makes it feel so much more professional. I also love the sense of community it creates, and I got a special moment with a duet and trio to highlight my own voice.”
The choir consists of soprano, alto, tenor and bass sections, creating a rich, full sound. OPUS is made up of both music majors and non-majors, all bringing talent to the group. The ensemble performs a wide range of music, from smaller chamber works to larger, more complex pieces. They have toured across Utah, Nevada, Arizona, California, Washington, Canada and England.
The performance drew a welcoming crowd of music lovers eager to experience the masterpiece in person.
“This was my first time attending an OPUS concert, and I really enjoyed the live music with the choir,” said SUU student Haylee Burr. “I know it sounds cliché, but I loved the final piece. It was absolutely beautiful.”
The SUU Department of Music hosts regular concerts, often at the Thorley Recital Hall. To view upcoming performances, visit the SUU Music Department calendar. For more information about OPUS, contact Andrew Briggs at andrewbriggs2@suu.edu.
