Leavitt Center to host Charity Thrift Store

Charity Thrift Store

A pop-up charity thrift store is hitting Southern Utah University’s campus in the Michael O. Leavitt Center for Politics and Public Service on Thursday, Dec. 5.  Students can donate their belongings to the Leavitt Center before the event and make purchases from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on the day of the event.

“We were trying to think of ways that we could impact our local community and Canyon Creek services is right here in Cedar City and we felt really inspired by their mission,” said Leavitt Center employee Cambria Slaugh.

Canyon Creek Services provides shelter to women and children seeking refuge from domestic abuse situations. All of the profits from this event will be donated to them.

The Leavitt Center is SUU’s student-run organization for politics and public service. With events like the charity thrift store, they’re aiming to show the student body that they are engaged in the service aspect of their title by bringing awareness to a local organization that helps people in the community going through difficult situations.

“We’re just trying to make as much of an impact as we can as students. College students usually aren’t financially able to donate a whole lot so we thought that this would be a good way to have small contributions from a lot of people, which turns into a big contribution,” said Slaugh.

In addition, all those who donate physical items to the thrift store will be entered in a raffle for a chance to win prizes.

Whether you’re looking for gifts to give this holiday season, new additions to your wardrobe, or just wanting to help out the community, go check out the pop-up store this Thursday.
