Cedar City Bike Works will host two-day repair and ride OES

SUU Outdoors will end this year’s Outdoor Education Series with Cedar City Bike Works. The two-day event begins on Wednesday, April 10, with an open shop work night located at 644 N 800 W, Suite 3006. A group bike ride around campus will follow on Thursday, April 11.

Wednesday’s event will be led by founder Mike Bolus, who will teach students to repair their bicycles using parts that were donated or salvaged from old bikes. The organization helps educate community members about bicycle maintenance and safety and aims to provide affordable transportation to Cedar City locals.

Bike Works is a local non-profit organization that has worked closely with SUU since its inception in 2019. Outdoor Recreation and Park Tourism students helped with branding in 2019 and preparing their opening workshop in 2021.

Since then, Bike Works has been repairing donated bikes for use in the community. They distribute the bikes to people in need of them and encourage cycling as an environmentally conscious and budget-friendly way to get around town. “We learned that transportation was a crisis issue in Cedar City, especially for individuals and families experiencing poverty issues,” reads their website.

Their mission extends to education and commuter safety as well. They help to host events throughout Iron County such as Bike Rodeos, which is held for elementary school children to learn how to ride safely, and Neighborhood Slow Rolls, where families are encouraged to spend time outdoors together on the many trails in and around Cedar City.

This event is free and open to all community members, though attendees of Thursday’s ride must bring their own bikes. For more from SUU Outdoors, visit their Instagram to see what they have in store during the next school year.

For those unable to attend this week’s event, Cedar City Bike Works hosts open shop hours on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. To stay up to date on their events and activities, prospective and seasoned cyclists alike can follow their Instagram
