Thin Line Comedy welcomes new and old members back

Thin Line Comedy, the improv group at Southern Utah University, held their welcome back potluck on Jan. 11 in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Rotunda.

During this event, co-Presidents Cameron Rey and Zina Johnstun hosted games, made announcements about their goals for the future of Thin Line Comedy and facilitated a beneficial learning environment for potential new members.

With a decent expansion in attendance this past school year and around 20 members attending this event, Thin Line Comedy plans to widen its audience and appeal to those who may be intimidated by certain aspects of the club. By dividing into smaller branches, they aim to grab the attention of potential club members while simultaneously expanding their audience. A few of the sections included in their re-imagined group structure are stand-up comedy and improv performance.

“We will have different performance dates for each of those branches,” said Johnstun.

One member of Thin Line, Anne Magee, anticipates adding a show to this branch outline, “It’s just a play where everyone gets eaten by sharks,” Magee states. Their rehearsals will run almost identically to a normal Thin Line Comedy practice regarding time and place but will be placed in a different area in the space.

Johnstun and Rey maintained a safe environment by encouraging conversation about boundaries, while also encouraging a high energy sense of play within games. One game in particular was called “Shadow Boxing,” where a player feigns an attack on their neighbor without actually making contact, and they have to react appropriately to the “injury.”

The club meets weekly and loves gaining more involvement. To stay up to date on their performances, you can follow them on Instagram. They also encourage contacting them using their direct messages to inquire about becoming a member and attending some of their rehearsals to get a feel for the environment.
