Swede Larson to Perform at SUU

Southern Utah University’s Department of Music brings classical guitarist, Swede Larson, to the Thorley Recital Hall stage on Friday, Sept.
20, 2019 at 7:30 p.m. Drawing from the “Golden Age of Guitar,” as well as contemporary new pieces, Larson has selected and diligently prepared some of the most loved and delightful pieces of music ever composed for the guitar to perform. This concert is free and open to the public.

Swede Larson began playing the guitar with his father at a very early age and brings a unique perspective to the instrument. His passions rest in sedate musical experience and the vigorous sport of exploring caves. In college, he had to choose between the two and made the choice to study guitar under Frank Koonce at Arizona State University. While there, he traveled during the summers, attending competitions and conventions, gaining the opportunity to study with guitarists such as Oscar Ghiglia, Michael Chapdelaine, Bruce Holzman, Martha Masters, Nicholas Goluses, Rachel Gauk, William Kannengeiser, and Lily Afshar.

Larson taught guitar at London Studios and took a sabbatical from performing in order to focus on teaching. Throughout his musical career, he has guided guitarists from many different walks of life, with many different goals in playing. His guidance focuses on bringing the highest
musicianship and the solid technique of playing regardless of style or genre. In Swede’s own words “playing the guitar well is done the same way, whether you are playing Joaquin Rodrigo or Led Zepplin, good technique is good technique, period!”
Enjoy an intimate evening of musical beauty. This will be a rare chance to watch a virtuoso interpret such inspiring pieces as La Cathedral by Agustín Barrios Mangoré, Estudio Sin Luz by Andres Segovia, Un Dia de Noviembre by Leo Brower and many more.
