CEDAR CITY, Utah — Thunderbird men’s tennis freshman Keonho Shin has qualified for the ITA All-American Championships, making him the first player to ever qualify from Southern Utah University into one of the biggest national tournaments in the Fall.
As a recent signee, Keonho has made impressive steps get to this point and came onto the team as the highest rated recruit ever in the T-Birds tennis program. Before coming to Utah, he was ranked ninth in Japan in singles competition and 20th in doubles.
This tournament will showcase the country’s best players and is set to be held at the University of Tulsa on September 29 to October 8, with the qualifying singles and doubles rounds on October 1 and 2.
“To have a player be selected into such a prestigious national tournament is an amazing honor for our program,” SUU head coach Sadhaf Pucher said. “The top players in the country play at this event.”
The Thunderbirds are coming off the best season in program history. The team finished the 2018 season with a 15-10 record and qualified for the Big Sky Championship Tournament for the first time since their inception.
