October 1 Through 7 Home Preview

Four home events this next week will give students plenty of opportunities to express school spirit and pride in our athletic teams during homecoming with women’s volleyball, women’s soccer, men’s cross country, women’s cross country and football at home.

Women’s volleyball will face off with the University of Idaho Vandals in the newly-named America First Event Center on Oct. 5 at 7 p.m.

Southern Utah is currently ranked fourth in the southern portion of the Big Sky Conference with a 0-2 conference record and a 5-9 overall record. Idaho is ranked in second in the northern portion of the Big Sky Conference with a 2-0 conference record and a 7-6 overall record.

The last time the Thunderbirds and Vandals met they played in Moscow, Idaho on Oct. 6, 2016 and SUU lost 2-3.

Women’s soccer will start the weekend with a game against the Idaho State University Bengals on Oct. 6 on the Thunderbird Soccer Field at 4 p.m.

Currently in tenth place in the Big Sky, SUU has a 0-2 conference record and a 1-9 overall record. In seventh place, Idaho State has a 1-1 conference record and a 2-8 overall record.

When the Thunderbirds and Bengals last faced off on Oct. 21, 2016 in Pocatello, Idaho SUU won 3-0.

Men’s and women’s cross country will be competing in the Southern Utah Color Country Invitational at Cedar Ridge Golf Course. The women’s team will start at 8 a.m. and the men’s team will start at 8:45 a.m. Tentative distances are 4k for women and 6k for men.

In their second game of the week, women’s volleyball will play the Eastern Washington University Eagles on Oct. 7 at 11:30 a.m. in the America First Event Center.

Eastern Washington is currently third in the northern portion of the Big Sky with a 2-0 conference record and a 5-6 overall record.

The Thunderbirds lost 0-3 when they last played the Eagles on Oct. 8, 2016 in Cheney, Washington.

SUU’s football team will be playing the California Polytechnic State University Mustangs for their homecoming game on Oct. 7 at 6 p.m. in Eccles Coliseum. For information on the upcoming game check back at suunews.net on Oct. 3 for Aaron Peterson’s in-depth preview.
