The Southern Utah University Wind Symphony will present the Blue Marble Live-to-Film Concert at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Music Center on Thursday, Nov. 5, at 7:30 p.m.
Combining live symphonic music with high-definition visuals, the performance offers an immersive experience inspired by the famous 1972 photograph of Earth known as “The Blue Marble.”
Unlike a traditional concert, where audiences focus primarily on listening to music, the live-to-film performance combines visual storytelling with live orchestral music. The musicians must synchronize their performance precisely with the film’s timeline, allowing the music to enhance the emotions and narrative of the images.
“Precision timing is the single biggest challenge,” said Dr. Adam Lambert, chair of SUU’s music department and director of bands.
He said the ensemble must maintain exact tempos, often using click tracks or visual cues to ensure the music matches specific moments in the film without losing its expressiveness.
The concert is part of the Wind Symphony’s 2026-27 Music Masterworks Series, which aims to introduce innovative programming beyond the traditional concert hall experience. Lambert hopes audiences will leave with a deeper appreciation for both windmusic and the planet they share.
“We hope audiences walk away with a deeper appreciation for both live wind literature and our shared planet,” Lambert said.
Tickets cost $12 for adults, $10 for alumni and $6 for youths and non-SUU students. SUU students, faculty and staff get in free with a valid ID. Tickets are available at bard.org.
