Fall Creative Writing Conference brings authors, alumni to SUU

Southern Utah University will host three days of readings and discussions from Oct. 7 to Oct. 9 as part of the annual Utah Humanities Book Festival.

The Fall Creative Writing Conference, hosted in part by SUU’s Department of English and Grace A. Tanner Center for Human Values, will feature authors and SUU creative writing alumni throughout the week.

Authors Nicole Walker and Christopher Nelson will kick off the conference on Wednesday, Oct. 7, with readings of creative nonfiction and poetry. The event will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Huntsman Reading Room at the Sherratt Library.

The conference will continue Thursday, Oct. 8, with an APEX event featuring Michael McLane and “The Once and Future Lake: Stories for the Great Salt Lake,” an anthology. The discussion will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Gilbert Great Hall at the Hunter Alumni Center.

SUU creative writing alumni Shauri Thacker, Jamsion Conforto and Sydney Beal-Cole will return to campus Friday, Oct. 9, for an alumni reading. Christopher Nelson will introduce the writers before keynote speaker Sam Weller discusses banned books and “The Bradbury Chronicles: The Life of Ray Bradbury.”

The final event will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Theater.

All three events are free and open to the public. More information about the festival can be found on the Utah Humanities Book Festival website.
