SUU Leavitt Center held fourth charity thrift store

Southern Utah University’s Leavitt Center held its fourth charity thrift store on Friday, April 18, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event brought in shoppers looking for affordable finds while supporting Turn Community Services.

Tables throughout the space were filled with folded clothing, accessories and books. Shoppers browsed a wide selection of items, including shirts, jeans, dresses and jackets, along with shoes, purses and other articles , like gloves and hats.

Student, Ayla Calder, noted that thrifting is popular among students.

“What caught my attention were the posters outside,” Calder said. “I love to thrift. Leavitt Center should have more events like this.”

Prices were kept low to remain student-friendly, with most items ranging from $1 to $6. Swimsuits were priced at $1, while items like scarves, hats and purses were priced around $6, and books ranged from $2 to $4 depending on the type.

At checkout, Leavitt Center employees calculated the total based on item prices before directing shoppers to scan a QR code to complete their payment. Donations were made directly through Turn Community Service’s website.

Attendees noted that both the affordability and charitable purpose of the store made the event appealing. One student said knowing the proceeds supported a nonprofit increased her interest in participating.

“I think this is really cool, the prices are very reasonable,” she said. “If I’m going to donate my things, I’d rather it go to a good cause.”

Turn Community Services is a Utah nonprofit that provides different types of services for individuals with developmental disabilities, such as day programs, residential living and employment opportunities.
