Learn to repair clothing at sustainability club event

Instead of throwing away damaged clothing, students at Southern Utah University have the opportunity to learn how to repair and extend the life of their wardrobe at the sustainability club’s repair night.

From 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 19, in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Living Room, proficient volunteers will present various demonstrations. Lessons such as jean repair, button and zipper mending and knitting and crochet will allow students to get hands-on experience in clothing repair.

“One of the main goals of the sustainability club is to make sustainability accessible,” coordinator Rylie Creager explained. “It can be a lot to try to get into, especially as a student with low funds.”

While students are encouraged to bring clothes that they would like to be repaired, all are welcome to attend to learn new skills, and no previous experience is required.

“I hope students take away the skills taught and feel confident in maintaining and mending their clothes, while also recognizing the impact of avoiding constantly feeding into the fast fashion cycle,” Creager said.

Students can enjoy snacks and drinks while learning basic repair techniques, and the first 50 attendees will receive sustainability starter kits.
