Flippin’ Birds head to Oregon to take on the Beavers

After placing second in the women’s gymnastics quad-meet in Logan, Utah on Feb. 9, the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team is heading to Corvallis to take on Oregon State University.

The meet will begin at 3 p.m. and will be available to view here

Southern Utah

SUU currently sits at a 4-7 record, placing them at No. 2 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Alongside that, the team is currently ranked No. 27 nationally. Even though they lost by less than a point to Utah State in the quad-meet, the Flippin Birds were able to heavily outscore the other two teams that share the conference.

SUU put up a fight during the meet, trading victories with the Aggies for the majority of the match. The best event for the Flippin’ Birds was the bars, where freshman Ariel Collum won the event with a career-best 9.900. The team also excelled on the floor, where Mia Hampton and Niya Randolph tied with a strong score of 9.850.

In addition to the T-Birds’ competitive showing in Logan, the team has swept the weekly MPSF awards for four of the five weeks this season.

Oregon State

The Beavers are just above SUU in the national standings, sitting at No. 26. They are also coming off a quad-meet, where they were the runner-ups to Boise State University.

Oregon State had to build up during the meet, where they began with a slow start on the balance beam. Despite this, they had a late game surge, resulting in a season best 49.025 performance on the vault. This showcased the Beavers’ determination over the course of a match, something the Flippin’ Birds will have to be aware of if they want to secure the victory.
