California passage of Prop 50 may flip five seats in Congress

California passed Proposition 50 which redraws district voting lines and potentially gives Democrats five more seats in the U.S. Congress. The bill comes in response to Texas redrawing lines earlier this year which flipped five seats to Republican. The redrawn districts are expected to give Democrats control of Congress after the next election.

“Proposition 50 proposes new lines for many of California’s 52 congressional districts, which would negate the five Republican seats drawn by Texas,” said the California Democratic Party in an online statement. “With a majority in the House, Democrats can fight back against Trump and Republicans’ MAGA agenda.”

Californians voted to suspend the current district lines that were drawn by an independent party and instead allow the California Legislature to redraw the lines middecade. Although district lines are not typically drawn between censuses, Gov. Gavin Newsom of California called on the state Legislature to fight back in response to redistricting in Texas

“Proposition 50 is temporary. These maps expire in 2030,” said the California Democrat party. “Prop 50 preserves California’s award-winning redistricting reforms and reaffirms the California Citizens Redistricting Commission’s authority to draw congressional districts after the next census.”

After 2030, an independent party will be reinstated to draw district maps in accordance with the population.

Newsom has recently alluded to a presidential run in 2028.
